What this test measures

Twenty-eight parameters that describe diabetes as a whole-body condition rather than a single sugar reading: fasting blood glucose (the 'sugar test'), HbA1c for the roughly three-month average, kidney function including urine microalbumin, and a lipid profile.

Why a doctor orders it

Blood sugar is the diagnosis; the kidneys, the lipids and the blood pressure are the complications. Diabetes damages small blood vessels quietly, and the earliest measurable sign in the kidney — a small amount of albumin leaking into the urine — appears years before creatinine moves at all. Ordering these together is what makes the panel a surveillance tool rather than a sugar check.

Symptoms that lead to this test

  • Passing urine more often, especially at night
  • Unusual thirst or a persistently dry mouth
  • Unexplained weight loss despite a normal appetite
  • Tingling or numbness in the feet
  • Known diabetes due for its three-to-six-monthly review

Understanding your results

An HbA1c of 5.7–6.4% falls in the range commonly described as prediabetes and 6.5% or above is in the diabetic range on standard criteria, but a diagnosis is made by a doctor on repeat testing and the clinical picture, not by a single report. HbA1c can read falsely low when red cells are turning over quickly (recent blood loss, haemolytic anaemia, pregnancy) and falsely high in iron deficiency — one of several reasons the fasting glucose is measured alongside it. A raised urine albumin-to-creatinine ratio needs confirmation on a second sample, since exercise, fever and infection can all cause a transient rise.

Typical adult reference ranges

Indicative only. Reference ranges vary between laboratories and between testing methods, and shift with age, sex and pregnancy — always read your own result against the range printed on your own report, with the doctor who ordered it.

Why the preparation matters

Fasting glucose is defined as no calorie intake for at least eight hours, and 10–12 hours is used here so the lipid profile is valid from the same draw. HbA1c itself does NOT need fasting — it reflects the last two to three months — so if you have already eaten, the HbA1c and kidney markers can still be run. Take your usual diabetes medication only after the sample unless your doctor has told you otherwise.
