About the department

What gastroenterologists treat

Gastroenterology covers the digestive tract — food pipe, stomach, intestines — along with the liver, gall bladder and pancreas. A gastroenterologist investigates acidity and reflux, long-running abdominal pain, altered bowel habit, bleeding and jaundice, and manages conditions such as fatty liver, hepatitis, IBS and inflammatory bowel disease. Endoscopy and colonoscopy let them look directly at the lining and take samples in the same sitting.

When it is an emergency

Vomiting blood, black tarry stools, severe unrelenting abdominal pain, or jaundice with fever are emergencies — go to the nearest emergency department rather than waiting for an appointment.

When to see a gastroenterologist

These are the reasons people most often book this department. None of them is a diagnosis — that is what the consultation is for.

Heartburn or acidity that needs medication most weeks
Abdominal pain that keeps returning, or is worse after meals
A change in bowel habit lasting more than three weeks
Difficulty or pain when swallowing
Unexplained weight loss alongside gut symptoms
A liver-function test or ultrasound your doctor wants reviewed
Tests and scans

What a consultation may include

Your doctor decides which of these, if any, actually answer the question — booking a scan before anyone has examined you often means the wrong scan.

  • Liver function tests
  • Whole-abdomen ultrasound
  • Upper GI endoscopy or colonoscopy
  • CT abdomen and pelvis
  • MRCP for the bile ducts
Surgical care

Gastroenterology procedures we perform

Conservative treatment is tried first for most of these. Each page sets out what the operation involves, the stay and the recovery.

Questions, answered

Gastroenterology — common questions

It is uncomfortable rather than painful, and is done with a throat spray or light sedation. The procedure itself usually takes about ten minutes, and you will be told how long to fast beforehand.

Fatty liver is common and often reversible in its early stages with weight, diet and alcohol changes. It needs assessment rather than alarm — your gastroenterologist will check how much, if any, scarring has developed.

A gastroenterologist diagnoses and treats digestive disease medically and by endoscopy. A general surgeon operates — for gallstones, hernia or appendicitis, for example. If an operation turns out to be the answer, they refer you across.

Not for the consultation itself. If an endoscopy or an ultrasound is planned for the same visit, you will be told the fasting time when you book.
